Z2U How to Get Perfect Pelts in Red Dead Redemption 2

Getting Perfect Pelts in Red Dead Redemption 2 is more complicated than simply finding an animal and shooting it. The animal must have the right quality, you need an appropriate weapon, and the kill must be clean.

Perfect Pelts are especially useful for crafting equipment and completing hunting-related activities, so learning the system early can save a lot of time.

Find a Three-Star Animal First
Before firing, study the animal.

Use binoculars or aim at the animal and check its quality rating. Animals can appear with one, two, or three stars.

If you want a Perfect Pelt, your target should normally be a three-star pristine animal. Starting with a low-quality animal means even a technically good kill will not suddenly produce the Perfect Pelt you need.

Do not waste ammunition chasing every animal you see. Check the rating first.

Use the Correct Weapon
This is where many players accidentally ruin good pelts.

Different animal sizes require different weapons. Using excessive firepower on a small animal can damage the carcass, while using something too weak against large game may require multiple shots.

Useful examples include:

Small game requires appropriately light weapons or ammunition.
Animals such as rabbits are commonly hunted with the Varmint Rifle.
Larger animals generally require rifles or suitable arrows.
Very large targets require enough power to achieve a clean kill.

After studying an animal, check its Compendium information for the recommended weapon.

Aim for One Clean Kill
Finding a three-star animal and carrying the correct weapon are only the first two steps.

You still need a clean shot.

Whenever possible, approach from a position where you have a clear view of the animal rather than firing while chasing it through trees.

Activate Dead Eye when necessary and aim for a vital area. One accurate shot is much safer for pelt quality than repeatedly firing into the animal's body.

Do Not Chase a Bad Shot
If your first shot only wounds the animal, firing several additional rounds may further damage the pelt.

For hunting, accuracy matters more than firing speed.

A better sequence is:

Study → Check Stars → Select Weapon → Approach → Activate Dead Eye → Take One Accurate Shot

This routine is slower than shooting everything immediately, but it produces much more consistent hunting results.

Transport Pelts Carefully
Getting the Perfect Pelt is not the end of the process.

After skinning larger animals, store the pelt on your horse and plan where you are taking it. Depending on what you are working toward, you may need pelts for crafting or other progression goals.

It is often more efficient to plan several hunting targets in the same region rather than repeatedly traveling across the entire map for individual animals.

Final Thoughts
Perfect Pelt hunting in Red Dead Redemption 2 rewards preparation. Start with a three-star animal, use the correct weapon, and prioritize a clean shot to a vital area.

Once you understand those three requirements, hunting becomes much more predictable and you will waste far fewer high-quality animals.
